Happy New Year 2021 - State of the Harborcams!

As we end another year of Harborcam Operations, I would like to wish everyone a Happy 2021 and take a minute to update you on where we are and where we are going in 2021.

First off, "thank you" to the great Moderators on the chat site and the many visitors who support the camera operations throughout the year, especially for camera replacements and upgrades.

The harbor cams have been operating for 15 years now, and every year is exciting and challenging. The fun of watching weather, sunrises, boats, wildlife, and people becomes an addiction after a while.

Especially in 2020, the cameras have proven to be a virtual escape to those who had travel restrictions.

While I have little technical abilities and less business sense, this site's primary purpose is to share with visitors the beauty of Western Lake Superior, and somehow, it seems to work.

Camera Operations - all eleven cameras have worked amazingly well during 2020, and they have held up during storms, cold, heat, and sun. My hope is for continued reliability during 2021.

In 2021, I plan to replace the bridge cam since it the oldest camera on the system now. I will have to run a fundraiser when I do this project. I am sure there will be other routine failures that I will deal with as they arise.

I also hope to upgrade the camera resolution on the canal cam with higher internet speeds now available.

Happy New Year! We have a lot to be thankful for and a lot to look forward to in 2021!

God Bless!   Den

The Algoma Intrepid backs out of the Duluth Shipping Canal 12/25/2020

In an unusual maneuver, the 650 ft Algoma Intrepid captain decided to avoid the harbor ice and back his way out of the Duluth Harbor this afternoon.
Even the typical boat/bridge salute was backward.
The Intrepid was built in 2020.

Sea Smoke Sunrise at the Canal 12/25/2020 (Timelapse)

Cold air (-10F) moving over the relatively warm waters of Lake Superior lifts sea smoke into the sky to mix with the light of a Christmas Day sunrise.
A present from Heaven!

Notice how the ice flow changes direction from the beginning to the end of the 90 min time frame.

Merry Christmas!

Bentleyville Tour of Light 2020 - Interactive 360 Drive through

Bentleyville "Tour of Lights" is a wonderful Holiday display located in the heart of Duluth. This is the first year where you can drive through rather than walk and by every measure has proven to be a success, especially for those not able to walk the sometimes snowy sidewalk. This video was taken using a 360 degree camera and allows you to use your cursor device on a desktop, or, your finger on a mobile device to move the scene and look in any direction you like. note: hold your finger down to keep the display looking where you want. You can find more information about Bentleyville at https://www.bentleyvilleusa.org/

Harborcam October Fundraiser!

 Hi everyone,

FYI, for the past years, we have been doing a fundraiser for the camera internet services, however, I think I have enough saved up to cover the costs on a monthly basis and will not have to do the fundraiser this year.

If a camera fails and needs to be replaced, I will ask once again for help.

I am very thankful that the cameras have been operating fine over the past year and expenses have been reasonable.

Thanks so much for your generosity,

Den

Update: Pilgrim Voyage

Information provided by Richard Cary and John Kucko , photos by John Kucko Digital

From Russia with Love (update):  The Russian sailors traveling “around the world” continue to make their way along Lake Superior toward Duluth, Minnesota.  Captain Sergey (pictured here) reports they battled weather yesterday and were navigating through wind and rain a good part of the voyage.  The weather challenges have slowed them down, they are currently moored near Ontonagon, Michigan.  He estimates they will now arrive in Duluth, their Russian sister city, Monday evening or Tuesday.  “The winds are often head-on,” says Sergey Sinelnik, “we have to catch the weather windows for small sailings.”  As always, major thank you to crew mate Alexei for his digital prowess in providing me images, allowing for my documentation to continue.  The Pilgrim, a pine wood replica of an 18th century Russian vessel, has been on this adventure for two years—over 11,700 nautical miles.  They will stay in Duluth for about three weeks before putting the Pilgrim on a truck and transporting it to Seattle.  It’s in Seattle where they will enter the Pacific Ocean and proceed to Alaska—before returning home to Russia.  What a journey!  I first stumbled into these brave souls little more than three weeks ago as they passed through the Finger Lakes Region and WNY on the Erie Canal.  I followed them until they hit the open waters of Lake Erie, bid them farewell and am able to keep track of them thanks to Alexei.  Something tells me our paths will cross again—stay tuned!  More updates to follow..
