As we end another year of Harborcam Operations, I would like to wish everyone a Happy 2021 and take a minute to update you on where we are and where we are going in 2021.
First off, "thank you" to the great Moderators on the chat site and the many visitors who support the camera operations throughout the year, especially for camera replacements and upgrades.
The harbor cams have been operating for 15 years now, and every year is exciting and challenging. The fun of watching weather, sunrises, boats, wildlife, and people becomes an addiction after a while.
Especially in 2020, the cameras have proven to be a virtual escape to those who had travel restrictions.
While I have little technical abilities and less business sense, this site's primary purpose is to share with visitors the beauty of Western Lake Superior, and somehow, it seems to work.
Camera Operations - all eleven cameras have worked amazingly well during 2020, and they have held up during storms, cold, heat, and sun. My hope is for continued reliability during 2021.
In 2021, I plan to replace the bridge cam since it the oldest camera on the system now. I will have to run a fundraiser when I do this project. I am sure there will be other routine failures that I will deal with as they arise.
I also hope to upgrade the camera resolution on the canal cam with higher internet speeds now available.
Happy New Year! We have a lot to be thankful for and a lot to look forward to in 2021!
God Bless! Den
Happy New Year to you and thank you for providing this service. We see the ships go by the south shore and it's so fun to look them up. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteYou do an amazing job and I tip my hat to you Den!
ReplyDeleteThank you Dennis for the update. Thanks for keeping the cameras operating, so those of us who live far from Duluth can enjoy the boats.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year

ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Dennis and thank you for all your hard work.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this gift and all the work that goes into keeping it going. Please know that even though we do not often comment, we are enjoying all the views around the area. A Happy New Year to you and everyone on this site!
ReplyDeleteThank you for operating these cams. It is really appreciated. The views are wonderful, and also the knowledge gained from the Mods is a real plus. Happy New Year to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteCheck the Duluth Cams at least a dozen time during the day. Always something new. Glad I can see the ships from home as it does not look too safe at times with all the people and not social distancing. Enjoyed the fox the other night running around.
ReplyDeleteJust checking. Cannot post.
ReplyDeleteI love the cams and your videos Den! I wish you and your's a blessed new year! Hopefully we can see each other at Gales this year.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the time you put into this project. It's much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all you do on this site, Den!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if something can be done about how somethings appear on the Bayfront cam. Particularly noticed this year (and last) during the run of Bentleyville, there are several areas of the light displays that appear to be flickering at a rapid time lapse type speed. There is a section that is still visible even tonight (1/1) located on the left side of the camera shot (above the evergreen treetops and below the aerial bridge). Freeway traffic on I-35 is buzzing by at normal speed, yet several section of the light displays are flickering at hyper speed? Can you see this anomaly and do you think it is something that a new cam might fix?
Greg, The lights issue is a variability of frequency in the light flicker and frame rate of the camera.
DeleteNot much we can do.
Thanks, Den. That's unfortunate, but at least now I know it's not something wonky with my ISP bandwidth!
DeleteJust another thought, please...although we would see that flickering when watching from the Bayfront Cam vantage point, I don't recall seeing it happening watching from Pier B when that cam was panned over to show the Bentleyville display? So could maybe an upgrade/replacement of the Bayfront cam possibly remedy that for next year?
DeleteI have noticed it on Bayfront cam but it is not there on Pier B when it is pointed that way so it does appear to be power freq. problem between the power used on the property and that used on B.F cam.
DeleteHappy New Year! Thanks so much for all of the amazing views. Watching the boats is addictive and now our 2 year old grandsons favorite activity. Awesome job. Keep up the good work!
