Lake Superior Ice Cover Rapidly Decreasing

The ice cover in Lake Superior is rapidly decreasing with the warming temperatures. We should start seeing blue water on the horizon soon.
Ice will mainly be in the harbors by the end of the week.

The U.S. Coast Guard will begin Lake Superior ice-breaking operations next week

The U.S. Coast Guard will begin Lake Superior icebreaking operations on March 20.

The cutters Alder and Mackinaw will enter Lake Superior around Wednesday, March 20, to begin ice-breaking for the upcoming shipping season. They will begin in Whitefish Bay, on the far eastern part of the lake, and eventually, make their way to Duluth-Superior.

The Soo Locks are scheduled to open on March 25.

Canal Cam update!

Update: 3/8/2018 - 14:30 --- Complete - I will be tweaking the image over the next few days.
Thanks to all who donated to the new camera.

Tomorrow Friday, March 8th, I will be working on replacing the Canal Cam between 12:00 and 16:00.  You can expect the camera to be offline during that time.  With any luck, the new cam will be up and running later in the day.

Sorry for the inconvenience,
Den

Tales from the Harborcams - Sometimes ice fishing can be hard work

Over several hours this morning, these guys worked like crazy to get a little fishing in -- hopefully, they caught something.

Tales from the harborcams - Two Harbors Airboat 03/02/2019

I watched the Two Harbors cam on Saturday, March 2, and watched a couple men go out on the lake in an Air Boat, like they use in the Everglades. I wanted to relay the experience I had watching something so unusual. These guys worked so hard getting ready for their fishing trip and it looked like they were taking everything but the kitchen sink. I was so shocked after watching them for close to an hour when they almost "flew" out onto the lake in this Air Boat. I had to laugh thinking I would love to know what they would think about an old 85-year-old lady, who lives about 30 miles west of Baltimore, Md. had been watching this very long procedure that morning. They must be a very die-hard fisherman to go to all that trouble just to go fishing, especially in the winter time. I really enjoy all the Duluth web cams and watch them quite a lot. Especially love to watch in the summer as the big ships come into the channel. Thanks for providing such fun enjoyment.
