Ed Culbertson Memorial (52 years ago)

If you happened to be watching the Canal Cam about noon today, you may have noticed a small group of people standing in front of a plaque on the pier break wall.

The plaque was placed there in honor of Ed Culbertson, a Coast Guardsman who gave his life, 52 years ago, trying to save three young brothers who became trapped on the pier during a fierce storm.

Capt Tom Mackay
Capt. Tom Mackay, talked about his friend Ed, who perished that night and reminded the news media of the bravery and valor that is often forgotten over time. Tom wanted to make sure Ed will be remembered.
Coast Guard

The words on the plaque read:
EDGAR A CULBERTSON
BM1
THIS PLAQUE IS DEDICATED BY THE PEOPLE OF DULUTH TO THE MEMORY OF A FELLOW CITIZEN, COAST GUARD BOATSWAINS MATE FIRST CLASS, EDGAR A. CULBERTSON, WHO ON THE NIGHT OF APRIL 30TH 1967 GAVE HIS LIFE ATTEMPTING TO RESCUE THREE TEEN-AGE BROTHERS STRANDED ON THIS PIER DURING A SEVERE STORM, HIS GREAT SACRIFICE IS AN ENDURING EXAMPLE OF HIS DEVOTION TO DUTY AND COMPASSION FOR HIS FELLOW MAN.

New Bayfront Cam

Based on your opinion I have installed a new Bayfront Cam.

We had enough money in the camera fund, thanks to your generosity, to pay for the camera without a fundraiser.

Happy boat watching!

State of the Harborcams - After the Storm

Just thought I would review of where the Harborcams stand after the storm.

Camera's - amazingly, all 11 cams stayed operational through the sustained 50-60 MPH winds -- I have to give AXIS credit for making good cameras. I am especially surprised that the Wisconsin Point cam stayed operational-that camera is wide open to the winds.

Internet connections -- There are lots of things that can go wrong with the internet connection and often does. My hope is that most of the cams stay up and do not get bogged down with internet traffic and poor connections. That said, there were times during this past storm when connections were intermittent and poor. Hopefully, with technology advances, things get better in the future.

Ship Alerts - I still do ship alerts when I am at my desk and notice them coming -- not always the best indicator.  Between the Ship Alerts, Boat Schedule Page and the AIS Pages, you should have a good idea when to expect activity.

Marine Scanner -- I have installed the best scanner and antenna I could find and hopefully, it is better than the old one.

Video Recordings -- I try to get the recordings up on the website when able, however, sometimes I am tied up and not able to do it. If you have a particular boat recording that you want, let me know and I will get it for you if possible.

Website -- The duluthharborcam.com website is hosted by Google Blogger. It doesn't have a lot of options to customize the comments and I cannot change the order in which they are presented. While Blogger is very limited, it is free.  In the past, even with paid sites, I would often get my account suspended due to high traffic.  Maybe next year I will try something else.

Response to comments -- I apologize for not always responding to comments -- I often fall asleep before getting to them and then I forget about them.

My thoughts -- I hope to keep the cams going for a long time as I get tremendous satisfaction from knowing folks are enjoying them.  I spend a lot of time on them, but, do try to keep a balance with other responsibilities.

I really, really appreciate all of the folks who help support these cams -- I consider myself the caretaker of your cams and while there are lots of glitches along the way -- I will do my best to keep them running.

Thanks,
Den

Silver Bay Cam is Now Live

Thanks to all of you who donated to this new camera. Silver Bay Marina will be a great addition to our viewing options and offers incredible views of not only the large boats going into the North Shore Mining operation but, also the marina that is such a good example of life on the lake.

There is a link the camera on the side menu and also HERE.   I will adjust the camera view depending on what is happening and the camera will also be set to do a rotation several times per hour.  I will also turn the camera to view the boats going into North Shore Mining and storm views when able.

Winter Storm Warning!

Classic Noreaster moving in.

In a replay of last years powerful winter storm that damaged the Lakewalk and caused other damage, we can expect the same scenario tomorrow with waves approaching 20 ft and winds in excess of 60MPH with heavy snow.

The power of Lake Superior will be on full display! Boats will be sheltering by this evening.

Hang on to your hats!

Silver Bay Cam project Update!

If the weather holds, we will be installing the new Silver Bay Cam next week. I have decided to go with a high-end camera that can pan @ zoom.  This will allow us to change the viewing direction with a single camera instead of the original two cam plan which was more difficult and technical to install.

I will keep you posted on the progress.

Jeffery The Gull Back -04/03/19

Hi fans, for those who don't know me, I'm Jeffery the Gull and I hang out here on the Great Lakes Aquarium roof where harborcam visitors can view my beautiful plumage.  Amelia and I just got back into town and have been feasting on some wonderful dead fish left over from the ice fishermen.

Amelia is over checking out a nesting area and I just stopped by to say hi.   Well, we'll be seeing you around town!

Arthur M Anderson Returning to Service

Yesterday, the Arthur M Anderson was moved from the CNN Ore Docks in Duluth to the Fraser Shipyard in Superior for drydock inspections prior to returning to service later this year.

The Anderson had been docked for the past two seasons due to a slow iron market, but, will be returned to service because of the improving market conditions.

There is no official date for its return.
