Project #4 Progress Report 4/17/2015

Project #4 Progress Report 4/17/2015
The goal of this project is to analyse the internet connection speed, camera setup and network traffic at the Marine Museum in order to optimize available internet bandwidth and minimize camera pauses.
  1. Issue - both cameras have occasional pauses due to bandwidth use and speed limits.
  2. Bandwidth does occasionally bounce into the 4MB upload limit.
  3. The bandwidth needed by each camera stream depends somewhat on the light conditions and busyness of the view.  i.e reflecting morning sunlight on the waves doubles and triples the need bandwidth until the sun moves out of the scene.
  4. Last week we raised $600 to investigate ways to optimize these two cameras.
  5. I have hired a local computer company to examine the internet/network connection to see if speed can be improved.  We will be starting this examination next Monday and hopefully get these two cameras streaming better then ever.

The Loons have returned

With the tree frogs croaking in the swamps, the loons returned to the Northland to join in the chorus.
I took this photo this evening on Caribou Lake this evening, three days after the ice went out.

Question - for those who watched streaming video of the KOM today?

For those of you who watched the KOM arrive on the Canal cams:

  1. Did the video stream smoothly?
  2. Was the sound OK, including the Visitor Center announcements?
Please answer in the comments below.  I am still working on the performance of those two cameras and I need your input.

--------------------------
The cameras at the Maritime Visitor Center have been having quit a bit of pausing and stuttering this year.  I need the get this fixes, and have tried everything I know that might be causing the issue.

The next step is to hire someone to come in a look at the network and see what can be done to increase the speed so the streaming is not interrupted.

Our goal is to raise $500 in order to find out what can be done to improve performance.

Thanks for your help and patience on this issue.

Ice Jam in Whitefish Bay

The ice conditions on the eastern end of Lake Superior are proving to be a challenge. With eight boats and four cutters slowing working their way through the ice field, it will take a few more day to clean things up.
