American Spirit arrives for winter layup

The 1000 ft American Spirit is the second of eight Lakers arriving in Duluth for Winter Layup. She will be docked at Garfield Birth C until Springtime.

Winter Layup begins

The John J. Boland arrived this morning signaling the start of winter layup as it headed for Fraser Shipyard where it will wait out the rest of winter.

Seven more Lakers will be arriving over the next two weeks to spend the winter.  The Soo Locks will close on Jan. 15 leaving the remaining boats on Lake Superior to find shelter until Spring.  Don't worry, cold weather will be arriving next week.

The Edwin H. Gott arrived in the morning hours while the Coast Guard Cutter Alder operated in the harbor breaking up a light crust of ice that has been forming in recent days.
