Lantern Room - Full Moon

The September Full Moon swung into position this evening right on schedule.  Funny how God's clockwork never fails.   Here the moon rose over the Duluth South Pier Lighthouse as it ticked off another month of 2014.

Moonlight Silhouettes

Perigee/Supermoon

The 2013 supermoon was a remarkable sight last evening as it came floating out of the Lake Superior horizon. It was the largest supermoon this year.

The moonrise got plenty of attention from Lakewalk spectators as it broke into the clear shortly after topping the North Pier lighthouse.

Also known as a perigee moon, the event occurs when a full moon lines up with the Earth and the sun at a specific point in its orbit, called the lunar perigee. That's the point at which the moon is nearest to Earth as it traces its elliptical path around our planet.

Since it's closer to us, the moon appears up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than usual. Coined by astrologer Richard Nolle, the term "supermoon" essentially means a bigger and brighter full moon.

Full Moon over Lake Superior

The North Pier Lighthouse in Duluth always makes for a good image to match a full moonrise over Lake Superior. Last night was no exception as the moon poked over the horizon at 8:25 last night.

Full Moon and High Tide

Seldom does a warm breeze blow off Lake Superior, however, last evening was an exception. With a 70 degree off lake wind, a full moon, slapping of the waves, and an anchored freighter I could have been on a South Sea Island somewhere. Better yet, it was good old Lake Superior that set the stage for another beautiful and unforgettable evening on the big lake.

The freighter, Federal Power, provided a backdrop for the rising moon as the boat, moon, water and wind interacted to make for a photographers dream.
