Harborcam and Hillsidecam are now streaming from Youtube

Update: 10/30/2019

Harborcam and Hillsidecam are now streaming from Youtube -- You don't have to go to Youtube to find the cams, they are still right here, embedded into the regular duluthharborcam.com pages.

I have moved Harborcam and Hillside to Youtube, my hope is that the videos will stream better and also give you an ability to quickly scroll back on the timeline to view the past hours in case you missed something.

I plan on moving Bayfront soon and than pausing to see how things work out.

It costs $300/camera per year to stream from Angelcam, the cost to stream from Youtube is a one time license purchase of $300/camera for the life of the camera.

As the cameras come up for subscription renewal over the next year, I will decide which platform is best for that location.

As always, I really appreciate all the support from you guys.

  2. Sorry to be negative, but I don't like it. Too many hoops to go through to get to it, where as before it would just pop up and there it is. Plus you have to have youtube and not everyone does.

    1. No Problem. There are no hoops to jump through- Youtube is embedded on the harborcam site.

    2. I have watched you tube for years. You do not have to have a account to watch the videos.

    1. The Youtube channels are embeded in this site, you don't have to find them. If you click on the Youtube logo you will be brought to the channel on Youtube.

  4. a benefit I didn't realize with the transition to YouTube... Live chat! That could be fun during big storms and things :)

    1. I haven't figured out how to moderate the chat yet as there is a lot of spammers floating around out there.

    2. Just delete them. If they keep coming back. Block them.

    3. I imagine you could watch for a bit and notice the common names/commentators and just give them some sort of moderator power to block spammers... it's all a learning experience.

If this all works out the annual cost savings will be amazing too!

  5. It works great using Safari on my iPad. When I use Duck Duck Go browser it takes me to Youtube and wants me to sign in with a Google account. So it depends which browser you use. Thanks for the work you do. I love watching the boats.

  6. Youtube does seem to stream better. I had been having some issues. Wasn’t sure if it was the site or my internet or a combination. As nice as it is still think I like the old way. But then the older I get the less I like change (-: Still love the site. Thanks for all you do Dennis. Doug Knibloe

  7. I LOVE the YouTube idea. YouTube streams are incredibly resilient, compared to the AngelCam streams that would often crash after an hour or so. In contrast I’ve had YouTube streams that have persisted for days without issue. It’s nice that this is cheaper, too!

  8. I love this move, in theory. Cost, capabilities, and user experience, they're all good reasons to look at the platform move to YouTube.

For me, individually, this will adversely affect my personal use of this site. My company's network security settings make it virtually impossible for me to see the streams that have moved to the YouTube platform.

I'm just beginning to investigate my best work-around options, but it will probably be via my iPhone on LTE connection. Any solutions that others have found would be welcome

  10. Thanks Dennis. I think this is a great idea. I just checked out the cams you have on YouTube and bookmarked them. They open quickly and the streaming is very smooth. I look forward to having this option for all of your cameras. Your hard work is very much appreciated.

  11. Noticed that the Two Harbors cam is youtube now. It was a nice crisp clear view, but no longer. Don't care for it now.

    1. Hello, if you give it 10-20 seconds, the image fills in and gets much better.
