    1. Well, it was thunderstorming this morning (down here in the Twin Cities too), lens probably needed some time to dry off--depending on what time the rain stopped, it must not have been dry yet at 10:21 when anonymous posted, but it's a clear view now (1:23pm). Grammie Pat, West St. Paul, MN

  4. I have my now expired Chief Engineer of Steam Vessels USCG license framed on my home office wall. 1960-1965 I sailed engine room unlicensed ratings on four Hanna Line steam ships. March 1966 I got my original 3rd Assistant engineer license in Cleveland. September 1966 the union rep came aboard in Buffalo. He waved the flag around and showed San Francisco newspaper copies of ships fully loaded and ready to go to 'Nam; unable to sail due a very real shortage of marine engineers. October 1 I was on a ship to India from Baltimore. January - May 1967 was my first voyage to 'Nam. I made ten 'Nam voyages 1967-1971, two voyages each year.

In this age of diesel powered ships the Anderson still sports her original 1952 equipment 7,700 HP geared steam turbines and two heavy-fuel oil fired Foster-Wheeler water tube boilers. Experts assure me that because diesels use half the fuel of steam plants that they are less expensive to operate. Yet diesels require a LOT of maintenance that steam ships do not.
