Update 2/14/2019 - Camera seems OK for now. I will defer an upgrade for a few weeks in order to keep testing its performance.
Update 2/11/2019 - 14:00 - I removed a thick layer of clear ice from the camera window. Hopefully, it can maintain it's own now.
Update 2/11/2019 - 09:00 - I will be stopping down this afternoon to de-ice the camera -- we'll so how it goes.
Unfortunately, I think the internal heaters may have failed on the Cam Cam. I will get down there this week and remove the ice, however, if the internal heaters have failed the ice will build back up fairly quickly.
If this is the case, I will have a fundraiser to replace and upgrade the camera and try and fix it for a backup with older camera parts.
The new/upgraded camera costs $1523 which I was thinking about doing later this year anyway.
The good thing is, Spring is right around the corner and I can replace the camera and have it operating quickly.
Don't second guess yourself. If you're thinking of replacing it, and this fundraising opportunity presented itself, might as well get a jump on it.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind doing the work, but I hate spending other peoples money. In my opinion, the Canalcam is the most important one we have, so, an upgrade is worthwhile anyway.
ReplyDeleteActually Dennis the distorted views from the Canal Cam have been quite entertaining. One day I looked at it and it looked like the canal had been hit. lol
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, it does make for an interesting image, reminiscent of a nice watercolor painting.
ReplyDeletedeb
Monet?
DeleteThat was just what I was thinking also, was a Monet...=).
DeleteThanks for all you do... :)
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice to get the Canalcam squared away soon, since sunrises are now in view of the cam and they are always enjoyable to view.
ReplyDeleteYes they are very nice.
DeleteDennis, Thank You . The service you make possible with the webcams is priceless. Mother Nature will win some. You take care in the cold and be safe .
ReplyDeleteJust a thought, maybe a stupid one,but why not switch the bridge cam with canal cam.until warmer days are here
ReplyDeleteNice view out of the canal cam. Good job Dennis!
ReplyDeleteI notice that the "Miner's" locator is back on, are they already getting her ready?
ReplyDeleteI think the ship is having some work done while in layover. That is why the indicator is on. Also if memory serves. MM wasn't moored there. I think it was moved.
DeleteJust FYI, I went back to the 1/8/19 post and it says "Mesabi Miner Midwest Energy" Am I incorrect on which dock that is? (i'm not from there and have never been but I'm trying to learn about the area since I do enjoy the cams and ships).
DeleteThank you.
Good job !
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the job you do - I am in Missouri and take a peek at the camera several times a day just to see what it going on. Love the pictures.
ReplyDeleteLet us know when you put up the fundraiser for the new camera. As always we will help where we can.
ReplyDeleteThank you for fixing the canal camera again. Since I am not able to travel to see this in person, I just love to sit and watch these cameras, especially the canal camera. I am so drawn to being by the water, so this makes it possible if only by watching it through these cams. Thanks for all your hard work and efforts, it is much appreciated!! Whenever I remember I like to try to see the sunrises and sunset, when possible. They are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteYour efforts make the day special for so many people.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all you do! I`m in NC and log on a few times a day. Really love this site!.....hope to make it up to the ports this coming Summer. Keep us informed about donations.....I`m in for some!
ReplyDeleteYep, just let us know where/when to make donations. I love seeing the Duluth cams from Tampa!
ReplyDeleteThe canal cam is back and better than ever, so sharp and clean! Thanks Den, the sunrise today (Wed) is spectacular.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know what kind of birds/ducks are swimming in the canal today (2/13/19)? I would think most had gone south by now.
ReplyDeleteSent donation via paypal, I love these cams. Thanks Den.
