Hello,
I will be giving an informational talk at the upcoming Gales of November event which is a fundraiser for the Marine Museum in Duluth.
I will be describing the harborcam operation and how much it means to myself and to the webcam viewers like you.
Just wondering if you could take a minute to comment with your first name, where you are from and why you enjoy the cams. I will read some in my talk.
Thanks,
Den
Cheryl from Mesa, Arizona
ReplyDeleteI love the harbor cam because I get to see my favorite laker come in Duluth (Paul R Tregurtha) and I love to see the changes moods of the lake.
Thank you so much for all you do. I enjoy the cams very much I love to be able to watch the ships come in at home. I will see you at the Gales. Debra
ReplyDeleteJune Watertown Mn. enjoy the cam look everyday keeps us feeling close to our favorite Duluth!
ReplyDeleteJohn, Moline, Illinois. Our daughter lives in Duluth and since Duluth is 435 Miles from us, your cameras give us an up close and personal view of what things are like where our daughter lives. Thanks, Dennis.
ReplyDeletewe can't travel as we used to so the camera keep me close, every day, to the lake and the boats I love to see.
ReplyDeleteYou can use my story Den..
ReplyDeleteKevin, yes I will-- thanks!
DeleteWe can't travel as we used to so the cameras keep me close, every day, to the lake and the boats I love to see.
ReplyDeleteI've lived in Hawaii for over 30 years but for over 40 years I spent Summers outside of Two Harbors at a family property. The Lake, the ore boats are so special to me. Since discovering the cams I've visited this site every day to see the changing lake, the Arial Bridge and Two Harbors- and to watch the boats glide in to the docks. I do get back every few years to spend time on The Lake but being able to see it daily really means something to me. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI'm Harold, from Bloomington, Illinois. We're a long way from any kind of shipping, but I love the views that the various cameras provide. Sometimes I will use different cameras to follow the boats as they come in and out of the harbor. The cams are the reason why I belong to the LSMMA, and the reason why our vacation last year was to Duluth! Thanks, Dennis, for allowing us the chance to live in another place for part of each day.
ReplyDeleteMaureen. Colorado Springs, CO. I'm originally from Minnesota and love watching the waves, big ships and and clouds.
ReplyDeleteI lived on the iron range for many years and came through Duluth many times. Now I live in South Dakota and enjoy watching what goes on around the harbor.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Debbi and I live in Iron River, Wi. My son, Wolfgang just got relocated to Dam Neck, Virginia with the Navy. My son has always loved anything sailing related, at a young age we collected all the Duluth tribunes ship cards, he to this day he can still identify a boat by its silhouette. Boat watching was something we love to do, even though he’s a long way away we can still boat watch together thanks to your site.
When my son was on under ways on the USS Toledo, and had opportunity to use the internet he would check out your website just to find some form of peace and be a little closer to home.
I’d like to thank you for allowing us a chance to connect when we can and do something we both like to do.
Thank you
Debbi
Paul, Littleton CO. I came with my family to Duluth in the 60's to visit Cousins. The cams keep me connected to the past and present in this beautiful city on the Lake Superior
ReplyDeleteKathy, Aitkin MN. I used to live in Duluth and have always liked being by the water. I watch the cams everyday to see what is happening. Thanks so much for your time and effort Dennis.
ReplyDeleteJack from Chaska, MN
ReplyDeleteI watch the Duluth Harbor Cams on a daily basis to stay connected with one of our favorite areas in the state. I get to see the beauty of the area and temperament of the weather, coupled with the important work of commerce through the shipping of products and materials to and from our ports. Also, Jeffery.
I live in Davenport Iowa. We can't travel like we used to. I so miss seeing the boats. The cameras keep me in touch, every day, with the lake and the boats I love.

Tara, from Gahanna Ohio. I spent my summers as a kid in Alexandria Bay, NY right on the St. Lawrence River. I watched the ships go up and down the seaway and became fascinated with them and the Great Lakes. I have traveled to see ships but haven't made it to Duluth yet. I love that I can work in Ohio and see ships at the same time. It really makes my day especially with some of the amazing salutes.
ReplyDeleteI love the ever-changing moods of the great Gitchee Gummi. Have great respect for the people on the or boats when the lake is angry. Thanks for the sunrise & lightning shows this summer!
ReplyDeleteConnie from Osage Beach, Missouri. I love watching the ships come and go, the Christmas on the Bayfront, the Tallships, and of course the snow. I lived in Eau Claire and Green Bay for 13 years. I have visited the Canal and just absolutely love Duluth.
ReplyDeleteDavid, Eagan, Minnesota I have been fascinated with lake Superior and shipwrecks since my first visit to Duluth in 1976. I love watching the boats come into port and depart. Makes me feel like I'm up there again.
ReplyDeleteI'm from Minneapolis.
ReplyDeletePablo, twin cities
ReplyDeleteI watch because the sheer enormity of these ships is fascinating. And because the weather patterns are so powerful to witness: the ice and cold of January, the storms we just saw last week batter the Duluth shores, the glassy calm of a summer day. And of course, the various boat horns. Thank you.
Dear Dan -- Thank you for allowing me to comment on your outstanding site; I am from Appleton, WI.
ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in Duluth and lived on Park Point (2 blocks from the bridge on the lake side) until I was 19. My husband-to-be was stationed in the Coast Guard for three years and walked past my house every day to tend and monitor the South Pier Light and Fog Horn. I met him the third year of his tour of duty.
He was marooned on that light for almost 24 hours in a horrific gale in November, 1953. The only reason the wall facing the lake didn't collapse from the powerful waves was that the shutters on the windows jammed together and saved the light. You can read the article on that storm in the Duluth News-Tribune, published on Sunday, November 29, 1953.
I love watching the tourist and shipping traffic on your various sites and monitor them daily on my computer. I have beautiful memories of my former "home", and your site brings them to life for me. I still have two sisters who reside in Duluth.
Thank you for all you do for me and the rest of the boating and Duluth-loving enthusiasts.
Kim Zimmerman Sheboygan,WI
ReplyDeleteI was stationed in Duluth on the CGC Woodrush 1973 to 1975 I enjoy watching the cams
Kevin P. Milwaukee,WI
ReplyDeleteI love being able to see whats going on with the big lakes. I hope one day you will get something like milwaukee has with the big sky cam allowing users to take control and look all over the harbor.
Dennis, THANK YOU for all you do to provide timely and accurate information on all things Superior. I am an avid watcher of the big Boats. I live just outside of Annapolis, Maryland and have the opportunity to watch the happenings on the Chesapeake Bay, but I find the lakes more interesting. Thanks Again, keep up the good work....
ReplyDeleteI am from Fox Lake Illinois-for many years we vacationed in Duluth and loved watching the boats, due to health reasons I cannot travel anymore so thanks to the webcams I still visit Duluth and the boats everyday. RON
ReplyDeleteLake Superior is a spiritual place for me. I've enjoyed coming up to Duluth/Superior/Two Harbors and surrounding areas since the 1970's, but can't visit as often as I'd like, so I love the cams. The cams and photos posted by Dennis and his photographer buddies are so much better (and cheaper) than the hundreds of photos I've taken in the past. Thanks, Dennis, for all you do. Grammie Pat, West St. Paul, MN
ReplyDeleteBlaise from Stillwater, the home of Minnesota's other lift bridge. Although ours is out of service for the season and being converted to a bike/foot bridge. I've just always been fascinated with 'mega machines', boats, planes and trains. I think I heard about the webcam while on one of the Vista Fleet cruises. So when I came home from a trip after the Tall Ships festival one year, I looked up the webcam and have been hooked since.
ReplyDeleteDen,
ReplyDeleteI live in the Great Lake State of NY and the Duluth Harbor Cams are an important educational tool in a nation that demonstrates a stunning ignorance of and a lack of appreciation for the gift that is our Great Lakes. Rich Reid Poughquag, NY
Jon - Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I enjoy listening to the love songs the gentle giants sing to the bridge tender as they enter and leave Duluth harbor.

Sunrise. Seeing the beautiful sunrise every morning and knowing our Creator is saying "Be still and know I am GOD...
Hi, I am from Michigan and view Great Lakes travel through a single webcam at the Soo Locks. The Duluth cams are great and I am learning to use them There are many things I wish I knew or could view, like cargoes and loading, etc. Also, I ran Grandma's Marathon in 1981. Loved the place. Steve
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I honeymooned in Grand Marais, so Duluth/Two Harbors is always a stop along the way for us. We are long time viewers and supporters. Being a Navy Carrier guy I have never been able to visit there during a Nor'Easter, but hope to some day. We love the views and thanks so much for keeping many people close to a place they love, Dennis. Jan and Ron Cedar Falls, IA
ReplyDeleteI live in Hemet, which is located in So. California, about 90 miles east of Los Angeles. Though I'm a railfan (I absolutely love trains), I thoroughly enjoy logging into Duluthharborcam to watch the boats and ships (and the occasional train). But I also enjoy the watching the seasons come and go, the lights and festivities of "Bentleyville", the various sailboat races and events, and the weather (wow, oh wow!!). Because of Duluthharborcam.com, traveling to Duluth is now on my "bucket-list": I want to experience the area in person! Thank you, Dennis, for keeping the Duluth Cams up and running!
ReplyDeleteName is Jan - When I was 5 or 6 my Dad brought me to Duluth to watch the trains and ships coming and going. I loved it as he did, and when he died in 1957 when I was in 10th grade, I told myself I would keep watching what he loved to do. I make a trip to Duluth once every year, but a number of times a day I go to the web sites and watch those beautiful vessels come thru. And the camera up on the hill also shows the trains. Thanks for having all of these cameras in so many spots.
ReplyDeleteGreetings. Thanks so much for your work and making these scenes available. I live on the coast of Oregon in a little town called Yachats. Lived in Duluth a few decades ago and have fond remembrance of the sights and sounds of the ship canal and harbor. I like the opportunity to superimpose the geography and climate of the Great Lakes to the edge of the NE Pacific.
ReplyDeleteRegards, carol
Lori - I live in Arlington, VA but grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I lived in Duluth for in 1983 while attending Duluth Business University before the Canal Park area was a tourist attraction. Ever since I learned about this site, I check it several times a day to for a small mental break from work. My brother also works at BayShip in Sturgeon Bay, WI so I've always had an interest in the Great Lakes carriers. Thank you for your dedication to this site and keep up the great work you do in your other photography.
ReplyDeleteI'm 66 yrs. old and live in Duluth. I've been a "Boatnerd" for 59 yrs. and that includes sailing on the Great Lakes for 9 yrs. My health doesn't allow me to get out a lot and the cams are one way I can keep in touch with the shipping scene.
ReplyDeleteI am Kris from Kalamazoo. I've been a Boat Nerd since I was a boy growing up in Holland MI. My first memory was watching the Algo Rail re floated after colliding with and running aground in the Holland Channel in 1972. I tell friends and family this site is my happy place. Keep up the great work you do!
ReplyDeleteLee from St. Louis MO. My family used to vacation in Minnesota every summer, and Mother and I always drove up to Duluth every year to spend a day watching the harbor and shopping while Daddy fished. They're both long gone, so I was really tickled a few years ago when I stumbled on this site. A day doesn't go by any more that I don't spend some time "in" Duluth checking out the weather and watching for the boats to arrive. It's my favorite site on the internet.
ReplyDeleteTom from Marshall, Mn...an avid camper, have loved the Duluth/North Shore area for some time..an admitted boat nerd, can't replicate the Duluth area and Canal Park and the big water...
ReplyDeleteDan, from Oklahoma City...Hi Dennis, I grew up in Sauk Rapids and remember taking day trips with my family to Duluth to watch the ships. I had often wondered where they went after they "turned the corner" to the left after going through the canal and under the bridge. This question answered after being on your website after only a few minutes. I also remembered the old Totino's Pizza building which still sits square within view of the GLA Cam. A few years ago I returned to re-discover Duluth and was pleasantly surprised when I found Split Rock Lighthouse, never knowing it was in my backyard as a kid. One of my most prized paintings was of the lighthouse and done by Thomas Kinkade. It was highlighted twice and signed on the back by the artist. Your efforts along with those of many others take me home daily, in all seasons, as I spend time navigating the Lake on my computer. For this, I will always be grateful.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in MN all my life; Duluth is my absolute favorite MN destination. My husband and i started coming here together a couple of years after we were married. That is 36 years ago and we have loved watching the waterfront and all the surrounding areas grow and change. We have visited Duluth 4 times this year and have one more trip planned in December. We watch the cameras at some point daily and truly appreciate the efforts Dennis makes to keep them operating in tip top shape.
ReplyDeleteOld Dave I'm from Mason City, Iowa, home of the music man. I have always been fascinated by the big boats. Our family spent a summer in Green Bay, WI and I loved watching the boats come in. So much nicer to sit in my comfortable chair and watch the boats come to Duluth. I would have liked to make one more trip to Duluth, but am too old to do it now. Thanks so much for the cams, I love them.
ReplyDeleteI'm a teacher in Houston, Texas. The views from the cameras are calming when nothing is happening and exciting when a ship comes in. Being here in Houston we like to see what autumn and winter look like as well. Additionally, my mother who is older and lives alone finds the site as a way to connect. Steve
ReplyDeleteVisited Duluth nine years ago. Absolutely loved it. From Winnipeg Manitoba. I grew up on Lake Winnipeg and I found Superior very familiar. I watch daily! Husband thinks I'm crazy.Love that you have so many views and added features. Jeffery is fantastic. Thanks Erin
ReplyDeletegood afternoon denis,
ReplyDeletemy name is jim and live in eugene, Oregon but born and raised near Detroit, Michigan. in the 1960's we used to vacation on the Keweenaw peninsula visiting dad's hometown and relatives, taking short trips to copper harbor and Brockway mountain. viewing the big lake from these vantage points left an endearing mark on my young mind so viewing the harbor, freighters and lac superior through the webcams relives those memories and is just plain to watch the action.
Hello:
ReplyDeleteI'm Grant from Champlin Minnesota. This website temporarily brings on a trip to the canal!
Newport, Oregon on the Pacific Coast. Used to live in So. Dakota
ReplyDeleteMy parents would bring us to Duluth every summer. I loved watching the ships going thru the canal or seeing them in the water when we would drive up the North Shore. We started bringing our kids here when they were young and we all still love Duluth as a favorite destination. One of our daughters attends school in Duluth and will text me to let me know a ship is coming in or going out. My way of connecting with her and Duluth. Keep up the good work. Thanks for all the cameras.
ReplyDeleteMary from Princeton,Mn and Duluth, the North Shore and Lake Superior is where my hubby and I spent our first vacation after being married 8 years ( now married 40 years) Since then we have spent more time in Duluth and north shore than any other destination, and now our oldest daughter lives on Park Point. Watching the webcams makes me feel closer to the place I love so much
ReplyDeleteDavid from Oscoda Michigan, I've loved boats since My first visit as a kid to the soo locks. These cams in Duluth are one of the few places along the lakes where you can watch these big ships in action. I've been a regular watcher for about 3 years now and love being able to view them. IT's a great site and the only one like it on the Great Lakes
ReplyDeleteMy dad was a Captain on the Lakes. When his ship arrived or departed Duluth, my mom would bring us from our house on the Point to Canal Park to wave at him. Of course, he always blew the Captain's Salute, which was cool, but we couldn’t wait to get back home to our friends. What I wouldn’t give to stand on the pier one more time and watch him wave from the pilot house. Thanks for making it possible to continue seeing and hearing the ships that were so much a part of my life.
ReplyDeleteJim from Abrams Wi. I've been around water my whole life and to me Lake Superior is one of the greatest places on earth. I'm a gearhead and also interested in how industry works, so I'm attracted to ships and boats, and find it interesting how much of our economy is affected by marine transportation. My wife and I try to visit Duluth once a year and your site allows me to check boat traffic, weather conditions, etc. I will visit your site at least once a day, if possible.
ReplyDeleteThanks for providing the site!
Tami and Rodger from Des Moines, IA. We both enjoy boats, and being in/on or near water. We love to visit the North Shore! It speaks to our hearts!
ReplyDeleteWeather interests me. First thing in the morning (most days) I check the canal cam for the conditions in the Duluth area. It's a unique place. Whether fog/sea smoke, calm, windy, summer or winter, sunrises, full moon reflections there's so much to enjoy and all the different cams are greatly appreciated. River Falls WI
ReplyDeleteJim From South Range WI Love to watch the weather on the lake and of course the big boats. I look at the site several times everyday and more when weather is an issue.
ReplyDeleteJeff. Tucson,AZ. I'm glad I found this site!!
ReplyDeleteI am Sylvia from Germany and I live near Hamburg, our biggest port. I found Dennis' excellent cams in 2017 and they have been a very important part of my life since. In 1965 I was able to sail the Great Lakes on a German freighter way up to Lake Huron but unfortunately we didn't make it to Lake Superior and Duluth. Watching the cams now brings back precious memories and I am ever so thankful for being able to enjoy each single day of viewing pleasure.
ReplyDeleteTom from Heath, Ohio. Born and raised around Lorain. Ohio so I have always been fascinated with the "Laker" boats. Have watched Duluth cams for two years and enjoy it! Thank you for making this possible! Especially like the Two Harbors cams.
ReplyDeleteLisa from Durham, NC. Have been to Duluth several times and love watching the boats. Duluth is a neat city and Lake Superior is fascinating. I check the website every morning when I get to work and then throughout the day. Love all the views, the big ships, Jeffrey and the Christmas lights in the park.
ReplyDeleteJudy from Oak Grove, MN in Anoka County. My family has come to Duluth and Two Harbors area since the 1940's. One brother moved to Two Harbors and another to Cloquet. It is our family second home and so enjoy the web cams at both locations. My father would have loved watching the web cams in his later years when he couldn't travel any more!
ReplyDeleteElaine, Mentor/lake, Ohio Love watching the cams and seeing what the weather is like "up there". My son works for Interlake and when the "timing is right" he can wave to us when coming into port. Makes him feel closer.
ReplyDeleteTodd from Winona Mn. Began watching the cams after we spent several summers in Duluth for summer hockey tournaments. Love when the lake starts to really "rock" in the wind. My son attended UMD and we try to return as often as we can.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work!!!
winona mn
ReplyDeleteJohn from Downers Grove Illinois. I fell in love with the Northern Mn area since I was a boy. Just such beautiful views, sites and great memories. I was always enamored by the size of these ships and the tales that go with them. The cams are a nice way of "being there" while being so far away. I visit the site every morning and really enjoy the videos and photography listed here.
ReplyDeleteDan from central Iowa. We've been vacationing in Duluth the past 4 years. Love getting on the website to see the boats and weather. It just makes us miss Duluth that much more.
ReplyDeleteI am Rob Koedam living in The Netherlands in the village of Kortgene. I am a ship-lover. Like to watch the lakers.
ReplyDeleteMark from Minneapolis. The second thing I do when I get to work (caffeine first) in the morning is to bring up the harbor cam web page. No real work until I review all of the videos, comments and live streams. Thank you for your commitment, I can't imagine not being able to view the lake, harbor and boats on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteI am from Ontario, Canada and I'd like to say how much I like this site. I check in every day. Keep up the fantastic work!!
ReplyDeleteMike from Georgia. Grew up on Park Point, my family owned the land on what is now Bayshore Convalescent and Rehab. Had a great bay/port view of all the boats going in and out of the Twin Ports in the 50's and 60's. My dad was a Captain for USS/Great Lakes Fleet and I sailed for awhile myself. Now landlocked, this is my go to website for all webcams and great stuff Denny does with the website. Much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteHi Dennis! I’m Doug from Fillmore NY. My wife Maribeth and I also have a home in Sartell MN. I was a heavy equip. operator my whole life so if it was big I wanted to be around it. Had never had the chance to get close to these boats. A couple years ago we spent a few days in Duluth. We stayed at the Hampton. The first morning I was out sipping coffee and enjoying the view when I heard a huge horn blast. Then the bow of one of these monsters showed up heading out. It just kept coming out and coming out! I didn’t think that thing was ever going to get done coming out!! I was hooked and have missed very few days of not checking on the cameras. Thanks much for all you and the other people connected do!!!
ReplyDeleteJean & Mike from Springboro, Ohio (formerly from Storm Lake, Iowa). We LOVE the webcams and check them several times each day to see the scenery and watch the boats come and go through the harbors. Those sights and sounds are calming in this hectic, noisy world-- and remind us of the wonderful times we have spent on the shores of Lake Superior. We are boatnerds, and we miss our annual vacations on the North Shore. We live further away from Duluth now, so watching the cams is an enjoyable part of our daily routine. They are a lifeline to a beautiful place we hope to be able to visit again.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dennis, for all you do to help us stay in touch. Please keep the fabulous views coming-- we would be lost without them!
I am a California native and fell in love with the Great Lakes when I learned about them in school in the 1950's and specifically Lake Superior. Finally, a family reunion took me to MN in 2005 and I had a very emotional meeting, much to my surprise, with Superior and experienced the thrill of seeing the Lakers come through the Duluth Shipping Canal. I have been hooked on virtually visiting the area almost daily for my 'fix' and the pure enjoyment of the area. I am very appreciative of the commitment that is necessary to keep this window on such an interesting place open to the world. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteKaren from Southeast Michigan. I have never been to Duluth, but am hopeful I can visit sometime. I was so happy when I found this CAM site. I watch it first thing in the morning, last thing at night and a few times in between. I get to see some of the boats when I visit Grand Haven and Muskegon in the summer.
ReplyDeleteThis morning it was nice to see the Cuyahoga and Capt Henry Jackman coming into the canal, thanks to your video from the Canal Cam.
Thank you , Dennis, for all of your time making our "visits" to Duluth such a wonderful experience.
Ron, Shakopee native, living in Moore, Oklahoma. I was in Duluth about 45 years ago, but didn't get to stay long, we just picked up a tractor and went back to McGregor.
ReplyDeleteI want to spend a few days in Duluth next time I get back home. I like to watch the ships come and go, and want to take a motorcycle ride up to Canada.
