American Victory departing Superior this Sunday Morning

The American Victory will be towed out the Superior Entry on Sunday Morning ending a chapter in Great Lakes History. The Duluth News Tribune did a nice story on the boat that you can read here.

  1. Very nice Dennis. Great link to a superb article in the Duluth News Tribune. What a history on that vessel!

  2. 19690712-19690805 I sailed straight-decker T3 SS Middletown 3 A/E summer relief for 24 days. I joined and signed off in Silver Bay. When joining a new steam ship one question asked was "where is the make-up water valve?"

I asked my Oiler who showed me but he told me that make-up water was taken only once a week on the Sunday morning 4-8 watch.

That was the TIGHTEST steam plant I ever saw. Make-up water replaces water that leaks out of the steam/water closed loops.

They were sailing short-handed one engineer so my presence meant the rest of the engineers could relieve each other for one trip off vacations for each.

    1. News Tribune article says 6AM Sunday. It will take awhile to get it out of the slip and start moving down the harbor.
      Depends on the weather also.

  4. Thanks for the info. Had been wondering.Would be cool to see it leave through Duluth but have a feeling it might be a tight fit for a boat in tow. Do you plan panning the Wisconsin Pt. cam to film it all? Also the new Harbor cam comes in fine on my laptop but only get a black screen on both our i-pads. Any ideas?

    1. I will be down at the harbor but will probably head off the church before it gets to Wisconsin Point. I should be able to pan to Wisconsin Point from my laptop if the cam is running. It was struggling a bit this morning in the heavy fog.
Hopefully the black screen clears up with a new ios update.
