Duluth Harbor Boat Traffic for Monday 1/13/2014

Arthur M Anderson and Mesabi Miner departed

  1. Ships use water as ballast to make ships ride smoothly , and sit in water to stabilize them when not loaded and moving to Duluth to get their loads. How does the ballast water stop from freezing in tanks in the winter months?

  2. Hi, the boats plug into shore power and will often run bubblers or heaters to keep from freezing. Also, since the ballast water is below the outside surface water it stays relatively warm.
