Several comments were made last shipping season about how fast this boat gets in and back out of port; and so far this season, she's continuing her efficient ways. I watched her arrival live--she came around Rice's Point at a brisk pace, chalk that up to a confident captain and crew, eh? :) Grammie Pat, West St.Paul,MN
Duluth is my happy place. If I won the lottery, I'd buy and fix up one of those beautiful old Victorian homes in downtown Duluth and grow old watching the ships. CI - Spring Lake Park, MN
I was in the Coast Guard on the CGC Mackinaw WAGB 83 back in the late 50’s. When I watch these beauties inbound and outbound, and they give the Great Lakes Salute the hair just stands up on my arms. It is hard to believe that we use to help some of these ships through the ice and they are still running.

And that is a little ore boat. They are boats, not ships, although I don't have a clue why. To see a stately 1000 footer come through our narrow channel is awe-inspiring. A real tribute to captains, pilots, and the bridge operator.
It must be a great life working on such a vessel. I can just imagine the joy this job must bring to a sailor. Nice way to make a living if you got to work.
I grew up in Charlevoix, Michigan, and this video reminded me of seeing the ore boats out in the lake. Loved hearing the boat signal and the bridge answer back. Brings back memories of our channel and bridge in Charlevoix and the Beaver Island ferry boat, the Emerald Isle.

We had a canal and a bridge as well but we were fish tugs and the Beaver Island ferry boat. In the summer, we had yachts.
Clearly the best ship in the Canadian Fleet.
ReplyDeleteEfficient! Ha, she's in Beastmode! Amazing!!

ReplyDeleteThanks. Great to view Minnesota ! Our large ships here in Virginia are flat with jet planes on the deck.

ReplyDeleteAh, the sound of Duluth. And that sweet feeling you get when you hear it for the first time each spring.
