What is the reason for two tugs waiting at the bridge for some ships but not all? Brother says it's to catch illegals jumping off which I find ridiculous. TIA
HA HA HA ...Hmmmmm only salties
Most foreign ships require tugs as they were built for speed and not for navigating tight quarters (like the Harvest States terminal in Superior), thus needing some extra assistance in the harbor. The reason lakers do not need the tugs is due to the fact that they have extra equipment such as bow and stern thrusters. Hope this helps!
They dont have bow thrusters like the other ships. The tugs help them with the turns and guidance.
Did anybody else see the sic million dollar man run across the bridge. lol
Yeah, Bob, your brother is being ridiculous; the tugs are called to assist ships in navigating the port and docking, and are seen more often helping foreign ships, and also in bad weather, breaking ice, etc. I believe this is the Federal Alster's first trip to Duluth, not yet listed on the vessel pages of Duluth Shipping News--there are many other Federal-named ships, could also be a name change.
