Superior Blizzard

The last day of February 2012 brought in a powerful blizzard to the Head of the Lakes.  60MPH northeast winds, and a foot of snow closed schools and snarled traffic.
There was beauty on the Lake Superior shoreline though. With the wind, ice pellets, sea spray, and roar of the waves, the power of the big lake was an awesome sight. Much different then the peaceful afternoon yesterday on the Split Rock Lighthouse shoreline.
Enjoy the storm pictures, I have to go shovel now!

Sunny afternoon at Split Rock Lighthouse

After what looked like a snow-less winter, the storms have now lined up to give us a good taste of winter before we get springtime.
While it's only a few more weeks before the big boats start moving, I though I would share a few images from a sunny afternoon at Split Rock Lighthouse.  The lighthouse area just received a foot of snow making everything pure white which contrasted with the deep blue of Lake Superior in a beautiful splendor of the beauty that surrounds is in the Northland.
So, enjoy the scenery from a particularly late winter afternoon on the North Shore.

February Full Moon

It's always enjoyable to photograph various scenes around the Duluth Harbor and a full moon rise is a special treat.

It's hard to believe that the big boats will be back in about six weeks, I'm looking forward to it.

I hope you enjoy this moon rise as much as I did.

The Last Boat in!

The arrival of the 1000 ft Edwin H Gott this morning was a fitting end to the 2011-2012 shipping season.
The zero degree temperatures were a good reminder that there is a bit of winter left.
I hope you have enjoyed the views throughout the year, and I will see you in the Spring.
