Full Moon over Split Rock Lighthouse

Full Moon at Split Rock Lighthouse - The clockwork of God's universe pulls up the moon from behind Split Rock Lighthouse on schedule during December and January Full Moon rises. It's always a good reminder of who is really running things.

Split Rock Lighthouse - Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Lighting

This evening was the annual event that commemorates the sinking of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of her 29 crew members on November 10, 1975. It is also a time to reflect on the memory of all lives lost in Great Lakes shipwrecks.

The ceremony is also a time to pause and count our blessings. 43 Years ago --- seems like only yesterday!

Wolf Moon - Split Rock Lightouse

One night out of the year the full moon rises behind Split Rock Lighthouse. Tonight's moonrise was a beautiful display of God's handiwork in the crisp air of a new year.

Northern Lights - Moonrise at Split Rock Lighthouse

Only a couple nights a year can you see the full moon rise from behind Split Rock Lighthouse.
This afternoon I ventured up the shore to watch this amazing event with a couple other fellow photographers.

Like clockwork, the moon rose from behind the cliff to display itself above the lighthouse like a big orange ball.

Split Rock is a true gem of Lake Superior and one I never get tired of photographing.

Full Moon at Split Rock Lighthouse

The full moon during the winter months rises at an azimuth where it comes up from behind the cliff at Split Rock Lighthouse making for a spectacular back-lit scene when viewed  from the Lake Superior shoreline below.
Split Rock Lighthouse was built in 1910 atop a 130 foot cliff. The lighthouse and has stood sentinel over the waters of western Lake Superior for more than 100 years.

Split Rock Lighthouse - The Jewel of Lake Superior

I often visit Split Rock Lighthouse and never get tired of it's sheer beauty.
Sitting on top of a 130 foot cliff, the lighthouse has stood sentinel over Lake Superior's North Shore for over 100 years.

Hang onto your hat as you step out on the ledge of the lantern room for a dramatic 360 degree view of the big lake.

Springtime Photography

Yesterday was such a beautiful day along Lake Superior that I couldn't help but get out and enjoy a day on the North Shore.
Here are a few images from a "Superior" afternoon. (All of these images were taken using my remote controlled photocopter).

Sunny afternoon at Split Rock Lighthouse

After what looked like a snow-less winter, the storms have now lined up to give us a good taste of winter before we get springtime.
While it's only a few more weeks before the big boats start moving, I though I would share a few images from a sunny afternoon at Split Rock Lighthouse.  The lighthouse area just received a foot of snow making everything pure white which contrasted with the deep blue of Lake Superior in a beautiful splendor of the beauty that surrounds is in the Northland.
So, enjoy the scenery from a particularly late winter afternoon on the North Shore.
