Into the Mist

This morning, the local fishing fleet headed out onto a calm Lake Superior and light fog. The sunrise made for a beautiful scene.

Ice fishing Lake Superior

Saturday afternoon turned out to be a cool, clear, and sunny afternoon. Perfect for doing some ice fishing along the shore of Lake Superior.
I took advantage of the weather and sent the little photocoter up for a look around at the fishermen and many portable ice houses put up to catch a few trout.

Stony Point Shore Ice

Lake Superior is beginning to lose it's ice cover and during this process, sheets of ice pile up along the shoreline.  Last evening I flew my little remote controlled photo copter over Stony Point, a scenic drive located along the North Shore, about 10 miles northeast of Duluth.
In this birds eye view, the setting sun, shimmering ice, trees, and water all combine to give us a glimpse of Gods creation. (Music by: Mary Beth Carlson)

Split Rock Lighthouse and Waves

With nearly two feet of freshly fallen snow on the north shore of Lake Superior, the invitation to take a ride up the shore was something I couldn't pass up. While the storm had passed, the waves were still kicking up a bit and the snow covered hillsides were particularly beautiful even though it is late April.

Spring is here - Coast Guard warns Lake Superior ice starting to thin, shift

Coast Guard warns Lake Superior ice starting to thin, shift
Warming conditions, shifting winds and a sun higher in the sky are starting the annual spring thaw, and causing ice on Lake Superior, the Duluth-Superior harbor and rivers entering the lake to be unsafe, the Coast Guard said Thursday.

Superior Blizzard

The last day of February 2012 brought in a powerful blizzard to the Head of the Lakes.  60MPH northeast winds, and a foot of snow closed schools and snarled traffic.
There was beauty on the Lake Superior shoreline though. With the wind, ice pellets, sea spray, and roar of the waves, the power of the big lake was an awesome sight. Much different then the peaceful afternoon yesterday on the Split Rock Lighthouse shoreline.
Enjoy the storm pictures, I have to go shovel now!
