Lynx arrives for the 2011 Duluth Maritime Festival

The Tall Ship Lynx sailed under the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge Wednesday afternoon as the first of three Tall Ships arriving for the D2011 Duluth Maritime Festival. The two other ships, the Pride of Baltimore and the U.S. Brig Niagara will be arriving tomorrow.

Visitors have flocked to the U.S. Brig Niagara and Pride of Baltimore II in previous years, but this will be the first visit to Duluth for the Lynx. The 114-ton Lynx is an interpretation of a privateer or naval schooner from the War of 1812. She is fitted with period ordnance and flies pennants and flags from the 1812 era making her one of the first ships to defend our freedom. The Lynx crew wear period dress and operate the ship in keeping with the maritime traditions of early 19th Century America.

The 2011 Duluth Music and Maritime Festival will take place on the waterfront behind Grandmas Sport Garden and the Paulucci building, harbor side on the shore of Lake Superior.  Festival goers will have the opportunity to observe the three ships arrive and depart the harbor several times each day, listen to the ship Captains and First Mates instruct their crew as they arrive and depart port.

Festival information, tickets, and sail-a-way tickets aboard the three Tall Ships® are available online at visitduluth.com.
